How to earn $1,000 a month from an Android app

1000_dollar_note

For quite some time I have played with the thought to finally update my app AL Voice Recorder again.

The app has not been updated with new features for almost four years and is generating close to zero income at the moment. Out of 4.8k ratings, it received a mediocre 3.6 stars.

That’s why, instead of publishing another update, I decided to completely rewrite the app and publish it under a new name. I will try to penetrate the competitive niche of voice recorders on Android and create an app that will generate a steady income of $1,000 or more every month. And I want to do it in a way that you can reproduce it.

In the next months I will share all my progress with you. I will write about analysing the market, selecting features, the development process, architecture, design, the marketing plan, app store optimization, marketing implementation, monetization and more.

Timeline

In the coming weeks until the beginning of June, I will make a first market analysis. Based on its results I will make a selection and prioritization of features. I will then select useful libraries and setup the architecture of the app (paper prototype).

I will move from Germany to Japan on July 6th. This will be the date on which I want the first iteration of the app to be ready. I already agreed with my designer to meet in end of June, so that’s when the implementation of all the basic features should be ready.

In Japan I will be on vacation until August 22, and I expect the pre-launch marketing and on-page ASO to take two weeks of my time. That means the launch date will be around September 5th (the exact date has to be analyzed).

I then will look into the user behavior and evaluate the success of the marketing methods and grow the app’s revenue to $1,000. I want to reach this final goal within five months, so around 5th of March next year.

$1000 challenge schedule

As you can see on the graphic above, my estimate is that marketing and all the things related to positioning and improving the app will need much more time than the actual initial implementation. A voice recorder is a simple tool and the competition is huge. Therefore a lot of thought and time need to be put into the marketing of the app.

Conclusion

I’m excited about this challenge and hope you are too. If you have any questions or requests, let me know in the comments.

  2. Good luck bro.
    Thanks.

  3. Hi, how is it going with the voice recorder app? I am also working on some projects that I hope to eventually bring in some revenue, mostly websites but I’m also working on one Android app. I’m nowhere near $1000 / month yet though, so it would be great to see you succeed!
