Android Income Report #10: February 12

February is over, time to sum things up.

If you are new to this series, let me explain it to you: Since Android is an open platform, I decided to be open about the income I’m making with my private Android apps too. In the last report I aimed to reach $4,000 for the last month. You will see if it worked out.

For all income reports, please click here.

Which Apps?

3D Invaders – about 212,000 installs (+20k), 16% active

AL Voice Recorder – about 652,000 installs (+60k), 21% active

AL Voice Recorder Ad Free – 961 installs (+51), 36% active

Droid-Blog.net Android App – 431 installs (+27), 14% active

SmsToSpeech full – 740 installs (+14), 32% active

80 thousand new downloads, with the voice recorder speeding up a little while 3D Invaders gained about 2k less downloads than in January, but we have to keep in mind that February had two days less.

What did I do?

Lots of work, especially for customers, no updates for my existing apps.

Advertising Stats

Here are some statistics from the two advertising networks I’m using, AdMob and Madvertise. Please read the second income report for an explanation of the following numbers.

AdMob:

Requests: 692,041 (-16k)

Impressions: 680,731 (-14k)

Fill Rate: 98.37% (+0.25%)

Clicks: 20,207 (+2.2k)

CTR: 2.97% (+0.38%)

eCPM: $1.29 (-$0.02)

House Ads: 2.496 (+1,559)

Adjusted Requests:  694,537 (-14k)

Adjusted Fill Rate: 98.01% (+0.03%)

Madvertise

Requests: 1,181,607 (-22k)

Impressions: 143,392 (-17k)

Fill Rate: 12.14% (-1.18%)

Clicks: 4736 (-1,775)

CTR: 3.30% (-0.76%)

eCPM: $5.24 (-$1.25)

While AdMob stayed at about the same level like in the last month, madvertise lost another percent in its fillrate again. To make things worse: Also the CTR suffered, reaching almost an AdMob level. To give a little preview: Many of you may know that madvertise’s developer fund ended with the beginning of this month. Since then, the average fillrate went down to 6% which is really painful. I hope this will change soon or I might have to change my ad networks once again.

How much?

Here are the numbers:

madvertise:

3D Invaders: ~$597.49

AL Voice Recorder: ~$153.72

madvertise Total: ~$751.21 (-$288.93)

AdMob:

3D Invaders: $269.61

AL Voice Recorder: $609.21

AdMob Total: $878.82 (-$28.27)

Market sales: ~$76.63 (-$58.19)

In-App purchases: ~$14.83 (+$2.65)

Total: ~$1,721.49 (-$372.74)

It is clearly visible that madvertise doesn’t perform as well as they did in the end of 2011. Since the developer fund ended and the fillrate dropped even more, I assume that the madvertise results in March will be way less than now, while AdMob will probably bring one or two more dollars than in this month.

What’s next?

I didn’t reach the goal I set in the last month, so it’s $4,000 for this month again. I think this almost is impossible since I will be travelling a lot this month and, as I mentioned, the madvertise developer fund has ended.

Android Income Report #9: January 12

January is over, time to sum things up.

If you are new to this series, let me explain it to you: Since Android is an open platform, I decided to be open about the income I’m making with my private Android apps too. In the last report I aimed to reach $4,000 for the last month. You will see if it worked out.

For all income reports, please click here.

Which Apps?

3D Invaders – about 192,000 installs (+25k), 16% active

AL Voice Recorder – about 592,000 installs (+53k), 23% active

AL Voice Recorder Ad Free – 913 installs (+60), 41% active

Droid-Blog.net Android App – 404 installs (+34), 15% active

SmsToSpeech full – 726 installs (+4), 38% active

A solid 79 k new downloads, nothing to complain about.

What did I do?

As some of you noticed, madvertise had a weak start into the new year. This made me work on my apps – I pushed updates for 3D Invaders and the AL Voice Recorder and worked a lot on my next app in the evenings. Furthermore, I invested 140k of the unused requests at madvertise to promote the 3D Invaders facebook page.

Advertising Stats

Here are some statistics from the two advertising networks I’m using, AdMob and Madvertise. Please read the second income report for an explanation of the following numbers.

AdMob:

Requests: 708,043 (+15k)

Impressions: 694,680 (+14k)

Fill Rate: 98.11% (-0.06%)

Clicks: 17.993 (-11.4k)

CTR: 2.59% (-1.74%)

eCPM: $1.31 (-$1.21)

House Ads: 937 (-406)

Adjusted Requests:  708,980 (+14k)

Adjusted Fill Rate: 97.98% (+-0.0%)

Madvertise

Requests: 1,204,155 (-83k)

Impressions: 160,285 (-46k)

Fill Rate: 13.31% (-2.74%)

Clicks: 6,511 (-3,621)

CTR: 4.06% (-0.84%)

eCPM: $6.48 (-$3.84)

The lower AdMob CTR is obviously related to the 140 thousand house ad impressions at madvertise that overlayed the “real” ads of AdMob. madvertise on the other hand had a weak start into the year, resulting in lower eCPMs and in a lower fill rate. I hope this will change again soon, but I’m confident.

How much?

Here are the numbers:

madvertise:

3D Invaders: ~$870.95

AL Voice Recorder: ~$169.19

madvertise Total: ~$1,040.14 (-$1,096.15)

AdMob:

3D Invaders: $289.63

AL Voice Recorder: $617.46

AdMob Total: $907.09 (-$805.27)

Market sales: ~$134.82 (+$40.09)

In-App purchases: ~$12.18 (+$2.82)

Total: ~$2,094.23 (-$1,858.51)

Compared to the last month, that’s a really bad result. However, January seems to be a harder month for ad networks than December, so it’s somewhat understandable that they both, but madvertise in particular, performed bad. When calculating the 140k house ads into money, that would be about $200, so AdMob should be close to a satisfying result again once I switch those off.

What’s next?

I didn’t reach the goal I set in the last month, so it’s $4,000 for this month again. I will put a lot of work into the app I’m currently working on, hoping I can start the beta phase early March. We will see.

Annual income report: 2011

It has not been one year since I started publishing Android income reports, but it has been far more than a year since I released my first app to the Android market, so it’s time to for my first annual report. It is structured the same way my monthly reports are but with a little more detail on certain aspects.

For all my income reports, please click here.

Which Apps?

3D Invaders – about 167,000 downloads

AL Voice Recorder – about 538,000 downloads

AL Voice Recorder Ad Free – 853 downloads

Droid-Blog.net Android App – 370 downloads

SmsToSpeech full – 722 downloads

Unfortunately I have no numbers of my app’s last years downloads, but this will sure change next year. What might  be interesting to you is that all the above apps were published in 2010.

What did I do?

I made improvements on my apps, added great features and completely reworked the internals of the AL Voice Recorder. I did some App Store Optimization but invested also a lot of time into ANDLABS, the Android development company I cofounded.

Advertising Stats

Here are some statistics from the two advertising networks I’m using, AdMob and Madvertise. Please read my second income report for an explanation of the following numbers.

AdMob:

Requests: 6,539,380

Impressions: 6,339,677

Fill Rate: 96.95%

Clicks: 151,543

CTR: 2.39%

eCPM: $1.06

House Ads: 3,201,330

House Ad Clicks: 33,007

House Ad CTR: 1,03%

Adjusted Requests:  9,740,710

Adjusted Fill Rate: 65.01%

Now what’s pretty interesting here is the house Ads. When you have been following my income report series, you probably saw that my house ad requests were close to zero in the last months. This means that, in the beginning of 2011, AdMob had far less ads to serve than they have now.

Madvertise

As I’m not using house ads in madvertise, no adjusted requests and fill rates are shown here.

Requests: 4,819,463

Impressions: 917,899

Fill Rate: 19.05%

Clicks: 43,989

CTR: 4.79%

eCPM: $8.75

When you took a look at my last monthly income report, you will notice that about a quarter of my requests and impressions on madvertise were generated in December. This truly was an awesome month!

How much?

Here we go.

Madvertise:

3D Invaders: ~$6,750.41

AL Voice Recorder: ~$1,292.61

madvertise Total: ~$8043,02

AdMob:

3D Invaders: $2,089.43

AL Voice Recorder: $4,601.90

AdMob Total: $6,691.25

Market sales (includes In-App purchases): ~$1,595.82

Total: ~$16,330.09

That’s an average of $1,360.85 per month. Nothing one could live of in a city as expensive as Munich but, since this were only my private apps, still a satisfying result.

Analysis

Let’s analyze this a bit. A pretty interesting thing is the development of my impressions vs. my income on AdMob. Let’s look at some graphs:

AdMob impressions 2011

AdMob impressions 2011

AdMob income 2011

AdMob income 2011

As you can see, my impressions and my income totaly don’t fit at the beginning of the year. However, when taking a look at my eCPM, this correlates pretty good:

AdMob eCPM 2011

AdMob eCPM 2011

While I had lots of impressions at the beginning of the year, the eCPM AdMob provided at the end of 2011 was able to top the results of that period by several 100%.

With madvertise, I had a similar szenario income wise. As I wrote above, I made most of my impressions in the last month(s) of this year, same with my revenue:

madvertise income 2011

madvertise income 2011

What’s next?

For this year I’m planing to release some awesome apps and hence want to make an awesome income. This is why my goal for this year is to have one month with an income of at least $10,000. I hope this will work out.

Android Income Report #8: December 11

Another month is over, 2011 is done. I hope your last month was as great as mine was. Let me tell you why.

If you are new to this series, let me explain it to you: Since Android is an open platform, I decided to be open about the income I’m making with my private Android apps too. In the last report I aimed to reach $3,000 for the last month. You will see if it worked out.

For all income reports, please click here.

Which Apps?

3D Invaders – about 167,000 installs (+29k), 17% active

AL Voice Recorder – about 538,000 installs (+51k), 24% active

AL Voice Recorder Ad Free – 853 installs (+37), 43% active

Droid-Blog.net Android App – 370 installs (+22), 18% active

SmsToSpeech full – 722 installs (+7), 40% active

More then 80 thousand new downloads in this month. The AL Voice Recorder crossed the half-million-border. Wow! Still, it’s download rates declined a bit at the end of the month but 3D Invaders’ downloads increased a lot.

What did I do?

I worked on some apps, no changes to the apps currently published

Advertising Stats

Here are some statistics from the two advertising networks I’m using, AdMob and Madvertise. Please read the second income report for an explanation of the following numbers.

Fill Rate: 98.17% (+0.83%)

Clicks: 29.441 (+11.2k)

CTR: 4.33% (+1.36%)

eCPM: $2.52 (+$1.12)

House Ads: 1,343 (+778)

Adjusted Requests:  694,353 (+66k)

Adjusted Fill Rate: 97.98% (+0.73%)

Madvertise

As I’m not using house ads in madvertise, no adjusted requests and fill rates are shown here.

Requests: 1,287,724 (+175k)

Impressions: 206,705 (+41k)

Fill Rate: 16.05% (+1.22%)

Clicks: 10,132 (+2,463)

CTR: 4.90% (+0.25%)

eCPM: $10.32 (+$1.18)

Again a really nice increase in both networks. Especially the increase in CTR at AdMob surprised me positively.

How much?

Here’s what you’ve been waiting for. This time I’m trying to give you a even deeper overview by providing graphs of my income development:

Madvertise:

3D Invaders: ~$1,817.00

AL Voice Recorder: ~$319.29

madvertise Total: ~$2,136.29 (+$627.46)

Market sales: ~$97.77 (+$10.75)

In-App purchases: ~$5.96 (-$2.23)

Total: ~$3,952.74 (+$1,481.96)

Almost $4k, a really awesome result!

What’s next?

Being able to reach this numbers again would be great. So I’m setting my goal for next month to the close mark of $4,000 for this next month.
